The water spirit or, njuzu in Shona, is treated with great respect and superstition. Traditional folklore warns that if the njuzu, which can resemble a beautiful woman, lures you to a pool it can drag you beneath the water keeping you down there for months. If this occurs the njuzu will treat you harshly feeding you unpalatable foods such as mud, insects and raw fish.
However if you are strong enough to endure this without complaining the njuzu will eventually warm to you and give you delicacies like rice and sweet things. One day the njuzu will allow you to return to the surface with a basket of magic medicines, mushonga, and knowledge allowing you to become a powerful healer or n’anga.
